Date: 2011-01-11 01:17 am (UTC)If you told Dean some five years ago that he’d have ended up in a serious committed relationship with no sex of any kind going on, he’d have kindly advised you to get your head checked.
Yeah, not the case anymore. (Or well, he still has enough time alone with his hand or otherwise he’d go stir crazy, but he isn’t having sex with anyone, so it really isn’t the point.)
Mostly, turns out that angels of the lord aren’t really the sexual kind of beings regardless of wearing a vessel or not. It’s not even that they don’t feel it (no one forgot that time with the porn movie); it’s just that it doesn’t do anything for them. Or at least, not like it does it for anyone else.
Okay, it’s not just this. It’s that, irony of ironies, they apparently can go through the damned motions when it’s just sex, but when emotional components set in? It becomes more than mere sex and it doesn’t just work like that anymore. Kissing is good, it’s actually awesome, touching is great, absolutely, personal space being banned is the norm, but if he and Cas move on to fun times? Then Dean is the only one strictly having fun, and when Cas suggested that they could still have sex anyway since it worked for Dean, Dean had declared that it felt awful and he’d rather use some time alone. It’s not even that he feels mortified – he knows that it’s actually flattering because it means that Cas really wants him – it’s just that he feels awful because there’s no reciprocating. Which is why they stick to reciprocating-only business now.
And the strangest thing is that he doesn’t feel like he’s lacking anything at all. Because overall, you need to look at the circumstances. Cas isn’t needed in Heaven anymore and he chose to stay here, but there aren’t repercussions, which is pretty much great in Dean’s book. They live together, Dean has an actual job, Cas has one too (Dean works in a record shop and Cas ended up at the community college’s library; Dean wasn’t surprised when he heard it), he sees Sam pretty often (still hunting things for him, at least for now), and this whole part of it is pretty good. Then, since there’s no Apocalypse and no war in Heaven, he and Cas finally had time to actually live together without any threat looming over their heads. Cas likes Dean’s books and he steals them all the time, Dean doesn’t mind and at the same time he has forced Cas to grow a decent pop culture, they stay too close all the time and they touch each other a lot and Cas is still a heck of a good kisser. He also is absolutely not tidy and he likes to sleep in late if he can, and while sharing a bed without any sex happening in it had been weird at the beginning, now it really isn’t. And fine, Dean loves having sex, but the feeling that comes when he gets in bed and Cas wraps an arm around his waist is something he never experienced quite so fully, not even with Lisa, and if you ask him whether he’s happy now, he’d say that yes, he is, without thinking a lot about it. So he has found out he can live without it, and that he can have a pretty good life all things considered. And in comparison to all the sacrifices he has done, this one seems nothing, especially whenever he remembers that if he doesn’t have sex with Cas is because there’s no other place Cas would rather be other than their bed.
Alright, he’ll admit that his life is fucking weird, but that is barely something he cares about anymore.
