Eponine had no room of her own; she and her parents were cursed to live in the same small space, through which traveled any number of thieves and louts. She did have a friend in the urchin that was her brother, he who lived inside the elephant, and he had guided her, once, to a quiet rooftop atop which rested a musty mattress behind an overhang. It soaked with rain and snow in the winters, but now it was dry. It smelled of use by beggars and lovers alike.

She spread out there, staring up at the blank wall that shadowed this space from the worst of the elements. Her body ached, the undernourished peaks of what rightfully should be breasts throbbing. When she closed her eyes, she felt the press onto her shoulder, felt the phantom hands traveling over her skin. She followed it with her own, torturing her soul to the remembered sounds of his voice, speaking in delight. Speaking her name. Thanking her. Offering her reward.

Hidden away from the city in shadow, she cried out his name in love, trembled with the peak of her want, and then folded in on herself to walk with him, in her dreams, 'til morning.
